Throughout history, young women have been compelled to advocate for their fundamental rights, often against the backdrop of nationalist, conservative, and populist political forces attempting to restrict them. This involuntary activism, a constant presence in every nation, frequently goes unnoticed but is the root of a lot of the fundamental rights we have today..
Sweden’s relatively liberal abortion laws today can be traced back to the 1960s when young women, including the film's protagonist Lena, took an illegal trip to Poland to obtain an abortion. These women's private decisions became a political issue involving government prosecution and monitoring by secret police being regarded as spies and possible traitors. Lena and the networks supporting these women forced a legislative change, challenging the politicians of the time.
What begins as a personal quest evolves into a thriller, revealing how authorities scrutinized Lenas appearance, behavior, and morality. Official documents even had checkboxes for recommending sterilization and detailed menstrual records. Lena reconnects with key figures from that period who have only recently dared to speak about their experiences.
