It is the darkest age of modern history, Europe in the 30s/40s. Right-wing populist forces are spreading. As a jew and prominent architect, Josef Frank is one of many who is forced to leave everything behind to create a new life somewhere else. In his isolation and frustration, Josef Frank escapes into his own fantasy world filled with colorful patterns, fantasy houses and his made up alter ego Gideon, an intellectual agent with a mission to create world peace. But when reality gets darker, he loses himself in his made up world.

In recently discovered material by Josef Frank (letters, writings, operas, plays, novels and manuscripts), we get the opportunity to bring Josef Frank's voice to life and dive into his inner world. But also see the dark history of Europe through his eyes, a turbulent time with two world wars. The Letters of Josef Frank is a story about a life on the run in a treacherous and violent world. And about the power of imagination as a way out of hopelessness.
